Dean P. Sutherland M.D., Ph.D.

A board certified neurologist, serving the Sarasota-Bradenton area, Dr. Sutherland has extensive academic knowledge from his Ph.D. in Neuroscience coupled with his specialized training as a physician. His desire to specialize in Neurology came from his days of teaching neuroanatomy to medical students for 6 years; he realized he was more interested in clinical case studies than the clinical research he was performing. Later, as a third year medical student rotating through neurology, it became clear that neurologists apply more clinical examination techniques than any other specialty. Dr. Sutherland realized Neurology allowed him to utilize his clinical skills to uncover the ever-deepening layers of complexity the nervous system offers; interact with patients, help them understand their neurological problems, and develop an agreeable treatment plan. Solving the complex patient puzzles presented by the multifaceted, variable disease of MS brings Dr. Sutherland a personal satisfaction. Dr. Sutherland feels the mission of the MS Centers of Florida Foundation is an opportunity to assist MS patients facing the challenges of the disease. The MS Centers Physician Network provides a unique opportunity to continue in clinical research for MS. Born in Ventura, California, Dr. Sutherland graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in 1985, M.S. in Neuroscience in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1994. With graduation from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1998, Dr. Sutherland performed his internship in Internal Medicine the following year, and his residency in Neurology in 1999 - ‘02, where he served as Chief Resident 2001 - ‘02.

Dr. Sutherland and his wife, Doreen, of 13 years, have 4 children. He enjoys fishing and acoustic guitar.
