Stuart James Shafer, M.D.

 

A board certified neurologist, serving Vero Beach since 1997, Dr. Shafer serves as the Medical Director for the MS Centers of Florida Foundation. Dr. Shafer recognizes the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patient is an underserved segment of care in neurology and is committed to develop a treatment model that comprehensively cares for the MS patient. His position with the MS Centers of Florida Foundation is an opportunity to further analyze MS etiology and treatment paradigms which ultimately may lead to a cure for the disease.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Shafer graduated from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine in 1993 and completed his internship at University of Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Upon completion of his Adult Neurology residency in 1997 at University of Florida at Shands Hospital, he began his private practice in Vero Beach Florida.

Dr. Shafer is a member of American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists and Florida Society of Electroencephalography. In 2001, he was appointed Chairman, Department of Neurology & Psychiatry of Indian River Memorial Hospital; Medical Director of Indian River Memorial Hospital Stroke Unit; Medical Executive Committee Member, Indian River Memorial Hospital; and, in 2002 appointed as Medical Director, Stroke Rehabilitation Initiative, HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital. As an active community contributor, he has served with The Weiss Foundation and Citizens Saturdays of Brevard and Indian River Counties.

Dr. Shafer has been married to his wife Helen for 14 years. As an avid athlete, he has participated in Marathons and Triathlons, and enjoys sailing, scuba diving and weight training.
