The MS Centers of Florida Foundation is a not for profit organization whose mission is to provide a continuum of comprehensive care to MS patients and their families. We work toward our mission through our 7 network offices, and a Social Service Resource Center, designed specifically for MS patients. As the needs of the MS community have come to our attention, we recently focused our work to multiple components.
An auto-immune disorder, Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic disease most often diagnosed in those between the ages of 20 and 40. Because it affects the nervous system, MS can take an unpredictable course.
The severity of the disease varies from numbness and fatigue to paralysis and vision loss. Devastating? Yes, and extraordinarily costly in terms not only of the cost of drugs and treatment, but also loss of employment, intensified stress on family relationships and the lessening of the quality of life of those afflicted. Beyond the individual and the family, MS impacts the lives of all Floridians … in Medicare funding, unemployment compensation, business productivity, etc. And, although government has responded to some of the needs connected to MS, it cannot absorb the great cost and address the programs, social services, therapies and individual patient attention needed.
